THEA 1100: Theatre Appreciation
Course Objectives: To find your own answers to the questions “What is theatre?” and “Why is theatre important?” These large questions will be addressed through the following targeted objectives:

Understanding theatre as a collaborative act involving performers, audience members, designers, and technicians,

Understanding theatrical elements and principles,

Understanding the skills and techniques used to create live theatre by actors, directors, designers, and other theatre artists,

Understanding theatre as an art form firmly grounded in history and culture, with a focus on exploring the ways in which theatre reflects the society that produces it.
Learning Outcomes: At the completion of this course, the successful student will:

Demonstrate an understanding of essential theatrical terms and concepts,

Demonstrate analytical and critical skills by applying course terms and concepts to the analysis of a theatrical production. Students will be able to identify and describe the visual, stylistic, thematic, musical, production, and performance choices made in relation to a production,

Demonstrate an understanding of theatre as a global and historical experience through identifying the elements and functions of theatre in various cultural settings and historical periods.
