THEA 4337: Costume Design
Course Description and Objectives: This course provides an in-depth survey of the theory and practice of costume design. It relies on lectures and student-generated projects and discussions to build an understanding of the job of the Costume Designer as a practical artist in the theatre.
Objectives include:

Refining skills in textual and character analysis, conceptual development, and research,

Understanding design principles and utilizing those principles to communicate character through clothing,

Initial development of an artistic style for communicating a costume design in rendering and presentations,

Understanding the organizational elements of the design process,

Developing an appreciation for the technical elements of costume construction.
The successful student will demonstrate a progressive understanding of character and script analysis and the ability to translate this understanding into the visual medium of clothing; a sense of collaboration with directors, actors, and other designers; and an evolving mastery of rendering skills.
